TWO persons have been allegedly shot at Afisiere community in Ughelli North local government area of Delta State at the weekend following leadership tussle that has engulfed the community.
It was gathered that a group of persons had in a failed attempt to dethrone the current leadership of the community which resulted to the shooting of one Anthony Apiloko and a Motorcyclist.
Afiesere community has been embroiled in a leadership tussle following calls by a section of the community led by one Chief Evans Akponana on the need for a financial audit of the community’s funds and amendment of the constitution before the next community election scheduled for July, 2020.
According to sources, A faction has dragged the executive of the community to court seeking an order restraining the executive from tampering with the GMoU projects funds paid to the community by an oil company operating in the community.
Contacted, The Delta state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP, Onome Onovwakpoyeya promised to get back to our reporter but she could not get back as at the time of this report.
But the community, Public Relations Officer, Precious Orichadere who confirmed the incident said, two persons were shot and they are receiving medical attention at an undisclosed hospital.
Also confirming the incident, a police source at the Ughelli Division ‘B’ police station, explained that a faction of youths opposed to the leadership of the community, were accosted on their way to the community’s town hall for a meeting convened with an agenda of passing a vote of no confidence on the Victor Otumemine led executive and installing a caretaker committee to oversee the affairs of the community
The security source who spoke on condition of anonymity said, “While on their way to the town hall, they were confronted by youths from the opposing faction leading to a shootout.
“At the end of the incident, one Anthony Apiloko and a commercial motorcycle operator had sustained gunshot wounds.
“The assailants immediately fled the community abandoning their Honda car following the timely intervention of the army and police to the scene of the incident. Investigation into the matter is still ongoing while a manhunt for the perpetrators has commenced.”
